BOOLOUMBA CREEK CAMPING AREAS REOPEN

Two popular camping areas in the Sunshine Coast hinterland have been reopened following a major program to improve safety.

Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones said tree specialists had been assessing Booloumba Creek camping areas 1 and 3 in Kenilworth Forest Reserve and removing or pruning any hazardous trees.

“These two camping areas are nestled in luxuriant rainforest and are very popular with tent campers,” Ms Jones said.

“In fact caravans, campervans and camper-trailers are not permitted there. That’s why it’s crucial that the Department of Environment and Resource Management manages these areas for the safety of campers.

“A few sites in Booloumba Creek camping area 3 will remain closed while tree pruning continues, and should reopen in the near future.”

Ms Jones said several sites had been closed permanently to reduce the risk to campers in those locations. However, visitors could still enjoy all the experiences these camping areas had to offer.

”All other camping and day-use areas in the Kenilworth and Jimna area are open, including Charlie Moreland camping area and Area 2 which is day-use only,” she said.

“Walkers can still enjoy Booloumba Creek and the tracks leading from the camping areas and Booloumba Creek day-use area.

“Camping area 4 and Charlie Moreland are in grassy open forest and are suited to all types of camping.”

Permits are needed in advance to camp at the Kenilworth Forest Reserve. Bookings can be made at www.derm.qld.gov.au or by calling 13 13 04.
