The Honourable Phil Reeves

More than $150,000 to repair sports grounds and clubs in SEQ

The Bligh Government today announced $153,456 in funding for south east Queensland under the Sport and Recreation Disaster Assistance Program, following flooding and strong wind damage in the region earlier this year.

Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the funding had been allocated to sport and recreation clubs and organisations to assist with the restoration and repair of infrastructure and equipment damaged by flooding and strong winds in south east Queensland in May this year.

“Grants of up to $20,000 were made available to assist with capital works projects to repair infrastructure, while grants of up to $5,000 were issued for replacement of operational items such as sport and recreation equipment, white goods and canteen items,” Mr Reeves said.

“Sport is an integral part in the lives of many Queenslanders and continuing to be able to participate in sport and recreation activities is a welcome distraction for those who have suffered so much as a result of natural disasters.

"It is important that we get sport and recreation equipment and facilities operating as quickly as possible following natural disasters, so people can get back out playing sport and getting active.

“This vital funding will assist clubs to offset costs associated with repairing or replacing damaged assets.

“Clubs have until Friday 17 July 2009 to apply for assistance under the program, with approved funds being provided up front so restoration work can begin as soon as possible.

"The Bligh Government also recognises that access to quality, safe sport and recreation facilities and services is essential if Queenslanders are to lead active, healthy lifestyles,” he said.

Mr Reeves said eight projects were receiving funding through the Sport and Recreation Disaster Assistance Program, some of which included:

·$23,096 to the Newmarket Bowls Club to repair their clubhouse and facilities;

·$25,000 to the Yarawa Pony Club to repair and replace show jumping equipment and fences at Kenmore; and

·$20,000 to Gailes Golf Club to replace sand bunkers and repair cart paths at Wacol.

“Helping clubs get back on their feet will help encourage people of all ages and abilities to become involved in sport and recreation,” Mr Reeves said.

Mr Reeves said the Queensland Government’s Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland ambition is to make Queenslanders Australia’s healthiest people and this program would help achieve that goal.

“We’re already leading the charge with our highly successful ‘Find Your 30’ campaign, encouraging Queenslanders to find just 30 minutes of physical activity each day, and to make healthier food choices,” he said.

Mr Reeves said the Bligh Government provides more funding for sport and recreation services than any other State or Territory in Australia.
