Up-and-coming water polo champions will converge on the Gold Coast this week for the Queensland School Sport 17 years and under Water Polo State Championships.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the rising young water polo stars would compete at Pizzey Park in Miami from Thursday 12 March to Sunday 15 March.

“Competitors for the championships have been selected from thousands of hopefuls to represent their school and sporting region at the state level,” Mr Welford said.

“I want to congratulate each of the athletes on their selection and wish them every success,” Mr Welford said.

“Almost 200 students from eight Queensland school sport regions will compete at the four-day event.

“The regions being represented at this year's championships are Metropolitan North, Metropolitan West, Metropolitan East, Capricornia, Darling Downs, Northern, South Coast and Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Welford said the event offered a great opportunity for the young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.

“I wish the students an enjoyable experience, both in and out of the pool,” he said.

“I would also like to thank our dedicated teachers and school staff who have given considerable time and effort to make the championships a success.”

At the conclusion of the championships 13 female and 13 male players will be selected to represent Queensland at the School Sport Australia Water Polo Championships being held in Canberra in May.
