The National Party has again confirmed it will slash jobs if elected by scrapping a plan to build 240 new kindergartens, Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said today.

“That's 3350 jobs – GONE,” Mr Welford said.

“The Bligh Labor Government’s plan to invest $300 million in Early Childhood Education will create around 2500 full time construction jobs over five years and support positions for up to 850 early childhood teachers.

“We will give children a flying start by ensuring that all 31/2 to 41/2 year olds have access to a high quality kindergarten program no matter where they live.

“These new kindergartens will be built in areas where there is a shortage of facilities, and services won’t be duplicated.

“We’ve worked closely with the child care sector, and with the Federal Government, to ensure these services go where they are most needed.

“I hope the National Party plans to front up and tell parents in Gympie, Mt Isa, Townsville, Toowoomba and Gaven, just to name a few, why their children won’t be getting a new kindergarten service – and why their local community will be robbed of jobs.”
