Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

Police Minister Judy Spence today marked a new era in policing in Cairns with the launch of the city’s new Bike Squad.

Ms Spence said: “The Bike Squad, who will patrol the city on mountain bikes and motorcycles, provide a highly-visible police presence and are another tool in the police arsenal for cracking down on street-level crime and anti-social behaviour. “

Ms Spence said the seven Bike Squad police were new positions for Cairns and formed part of the Cairns District Tactical Crime Squad.

“This Government is committed to increasing the number of police on Queensland’s streets and the new Cairns Bike Squad is another example of how we are delivering on that commitment," she said.

Member for Cairns Desley Boyle said that the new Cairns Bike Squad would provide a boost to local police.

““The geography of the Cairns CBD and the foreshore make bikes an ideal way to conduct patrols and respond rapidly to incidents. This is an example of this Government's commitment to keeping Cairns safe for tourists and residents alike.”

Ms Spence said the Brisbane Bike Squad, who cover an average of 25 kilometres every shift, had been a huge success.

“The Brisbane Bike Squad have proved themselves quick and versatile when responding to incidents – they can cross blocks in a matter of minutes and they can travel through arcades, along walkways and down narrow laneways,” she said.

“I am sure the Cairns Bike Squad will prove just as successful.”

Ms Spence said the officers would also be available to patrol with other members of the existing Tactical Crime Squad in other parts of the Cairns District when necessary.
