Minister for Women Margaret Keech encourages all Queenslanders to join in celebrations for International Women’s Day on 8 March.

Mrs Keech said the Bligh Government’s International Women’s Day theme: Our Women, Our State, celebrates the achievements of Queensland’s women over the last 150 years and look toward tomorrow’s Queensland.

“Some significant achievements of Queensland women include earning the right to vote in Queensland’s elections in 1905 and in1965 for indigenous women, “ Mrs Keech said.

“Women also could become members of Parliament in 1915 and today we have Queensland’s first female Premier.

“Queensland women in the last century also made advances for equal employment and pay. In 1950 legislation increased women’s income to 75% to that of men, while in 1969 the ban on married women working in the public sector was lifted.

“When reflecting on our past achievements, we should also remember that Queensland’s women have faced many challenges since the 1800’s,” Mrs Keech said.

“From pioneer days to the great depression women and in wartime, women have played an important role in helping shape Queensland’s future in tough times.

“Today many Queensland women are supporting their families through the challenges of the global financial crisis.

“International Women’s Day is a time to recognise the valuable role women play in shaping our future.”

Mrs Keech said the Bligh Government is committed to the long term future of Queensland women and their families by protecting jobs.

“Labor has a certain and stable plan for managing the current economic crisis, such as the Bligh Government’s commitment to the biggest infrastructure program in the country,” she said.

“International Women’s Day is an opportunity for us all to reflect on how women have shaped our state. It is also a chance for us to focus on how we will define Queensland’s future.

“Anna Bligh and her experienced and stable team, have clear and costed plans for our state’s future.

“Labor are committed to creating a fairer, stronger Queensland.”
