Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

Minister for Police and Sport Judy Spence today opened the new Cloncurry PCYC.

Ms Spence said the PCYC will provide the people of Cloncurry with an excellent opportunity to get active and learn new skills.

“The new PCYC runs a number of sporting programs including boxing, judo, futsal and circuit training. They also provide pool tables, video game facilities, an internet café and a canteen.

“With attendances in excess of 12,700 for the last financial year and more than 290 members ranging in age from six months to 94 years of age, it’s clear the community of Cloncurry has embraced this new PCYC.

“These activities provide opportunities for community members to develop valuable skills, increase self-confidence, promote healthy lifestyles and alleviate boredom,” Ms Spence said.

“The Queensland Government provides funding for 66 police officers to work in PCYCs statewide. In the past 18 months, the Government has provided almost $3.5 million in sport and recreation funding for upgrades to Queensland’s PCYCs.

“The Bligh Government is committed to supporting safe and caring communities, and making Queenslanders Australia’s healthiest people – and the work of PCYCs help us to achieve our Toward Q2 goals for Tomorrow’s Queensland.

“That is why we continue to invest more money in sport than any other state in Australia. Our record sport budget last year of $152 Million was $40 Million more than any other state,” Ms Spence said.

The Cloncurry PCYC, located at 120 King Street, began operation as an Activity Centre linked to the Mount Isa PCYC in March 2006. It was upgraded to branch status in December 2007 when Sergeant Mark Hughes was appointed Branch Manager.
