Treasurer
The Honourable Andrew Fraser
Lawrence Springborg’s plan to cut jobs from the public sector was callous economic vandalism, Treasurer Andrew Fraser said today.
“Mr Springborg has repeatedly said he would cut jobs from the public sector.
“His plan to make jobs ‘de-necessary’ through natural attrition would see 12,000 jobs cut from the public sector each and every year.
“That puts every Queenslander at risk – at risk of losing their job or losing access to vital services.
“Mr Springborg’s commitment to cutting $1 billion each and every year simply cannot be achieved without job losses.
“Even if he cut every job made vacant – every teacher, every nurse, every court clerk, every admin officer in a police station … every single position that became vacant does not achieve $1 billion.
“To say he would achieve this selectively is impossible.
“To cut jobs as unemployment is rising is economic madness.
“To cut jobs as unemployment queues lengthen is callous.
“He has not explained his $1 billion cut – because he can’t.
Mr Fraser said Labor’s plan is clear: to keep the $17 billion building program to support jobs.
