Communities and Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today said a new centre would create up to 17 jobs and support up to 60 families in northern Brisbane, Pine Rivers and Caboolture.

Opening the Deception Bay Respite Centre on behalf of the Minister, State Member for Murrumba Dean Wells said the facility would fast become an important community asset.

“This centre will provide overnight respite for people with a disability, as well as activities and outings, and it will give local families a well-deserved break from their day-to-day responsibilities,” Mr Wells said.

“Having a short break supports carers in their primary caring role, while giving the person being cared for a positive and enjoyable experience,” he said.

“This centre will provide respite for up to four adult clients at any one time, with potentially 60 local families having the opportunity to use the centre for up to four weeks a year.

“Along with having the capacity to cater for short, unplanned stays and emergency accommodation, this centre will provide almost 1,800 nights of respite for local families.”

Run by Disability Services Queensland (DSQ), the Deception Bay Respite Centre will focus on supporting local children and adults who have an intellectual disability.

Ms Nelson-Carr said local families from Caboolture to Bridgeman Downs now had access to a modern, purpose-built respite facility which would make their lives just that little bit easier.

“The Deception Bay Respite Centre has been made possible with $3.15 million in Bligh Government funding, demonstrating this government’s commitment to providing services for our region,” said the Minister.

“I want to acknowledge the sustained advocacy of Mr Wells on behalf of carers in the region, and I am sure this centre will go a long way to addressing issues he has raised on behalf of the community,” she said.

“I am also pleased the centre will create up to 17 new jobs for this area – with seven permanent full-time Residential Care Officers and up to 10 temporary or casual jobs.”
