Minister for Health
The Honourable Stephen Robertson

Health Minister Stephen Robertson has announced that $250,000 will be immediately directed to Bundaberg Hospital, following an independent review of the functions and management systems of the Emergency Department.

The review by Dr Peter Brennan, a Victorian doctor and senior health executive, made a number of recommendations about the Bundaberg Hospital Emergency Department.

The Minister ordered the review, following allegations raised about the Bundaberg Hospital Emergency Department earlier this month.

"I have responded immediately by directing $250,000 from our existing resources to modify the ED waiting area to include a dedicated paediatrics area," Mr Robertson said.

“The triage area will also be modified to ensure a single triage process is in place.

“Additional operational funds have been identified and will improve service delivery at the front counter.

“On-site security will also be made more visible.

"I have requested that my Director-General seek urgent advice on other recommendations of the review, particularly the design of the new Emergency Department.

"I want all recommendations addressed quickly."

The Director-General Mick Reid traveled to Bundaberg today to discuss the report with hospital staff.

“It is very pleasing to see such an open dialogue being established with staff, “Mr Robertson said.

“I would like to note that Dr Brennan particularly commends the nurses for the excellent standard of care they provide.

"I also thank all staff for their hard work and professionalism,” Mr Robertson said.

The review/ recommendations are available at www.health.qld.gov.au

“I have also just been advised that the Crime and Misconduct Commission has reviewed the Queensland Health Ethical Standard Unit report into allegations of falsification of patient waiting time data and the triaging and treating of patients by administrative officers at Bundaberg Hospital ED.

“The CMC is satisfied with the investigation and its findings that the allegations are not substantiated.

“I have asked the Director General to review the findings and recommendations and take appropriate action,” Mr Robertson said.
