The Honourable Warren Pitt

The Bligh Government has today ensured that a key piece of Gold Coast history, the 120-year-old Surrey House, will not be impacted by a nearby road upgrade.

Minister for Main Roads Warren Pitt and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor confirmed that the historic home will remain untouched when the proposed upgrade of Southport-Nerang Road progresses.

The landmark Surrey House property, situated on top of the hill at 159 Nerang Street Southport, is one of the few remaining ‘Old Queenslander’ style homes in the region and is believed to be the oldest surviving residence in Southport.

Today it is a private residence, which accommodates a specialist medical practice, and has been lovingly restored by its current owners.

Mr Pitt said the Southport-Nerang Road will be widened and realigned to transform this major road link into a modern, efficient route, which supports the growth of public transport in the area.

“This important project, a commitment under the Government’s South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program (SEQIPP), will help deal with burgeoning traffic growth in this part of the Gold Coast,” Mr Pitt said.

“More than 1800 people are moving to Queensland each week, many of them to the Gold Coast.

“The Bligh Government is helping to manage the growth by continuing to invest in our record roads program to maintain jobs and keep the Queensland economy moving.

“But at the same time, it is important that we do not lose sight of our history. It is great that I am able to confirm today that the magnificent Surrey House property has been saved.

“I have to give special thanks to Peter Lawlor for his unceasing efforts in bringing to my attention the vital historical importance of Surrey House to residents of Southport and the Gold Coast.

Mr Lawlor warmly welcomed the announcement.

“Surrey House is an extremely important part of the history of the Gold Coast. It is a beautiful reminder of the life and character of the colonial days of Southport and our wonderful region,” Mr Lawlor said.

“I understand that the Department of Main Roads is planning to commence consultation with the community on the preferred option for the Southport-Nerang Road upgrade in the near future.

“An earlier option would have directly impacted on Surrey House and it is fantastic news that this has now been clearly ruled out.

“Community feedback plays a key role in the provision of any infrastructure upgrades by the Government and it is great that the Minister and the Main Roads Department have listened to the community’s views about Surrey House.

The Southport-Nerang road upgrade involves widening a section of the road between Falconer Street and Queens Street.

The upgraded road will provide four general lanes of traffic with on-road cycle lanes.

Extended turning lanes at signalised intersections will improve traffic flow and closure of the median between sets of signals will improve road safety.
