Treasurer
The Honourable Andrew Fraser
There is just 24 hours before Lawrence Springborg's self-imposed deadline of revealing how he is going to pay for his more than $2.5 billion worth of unfunded election promises, Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser said today.
"With 24 hours to go he's got to explain how he can pay for $2.572 billion worth of promises he's made so far during the campaign,'' Mr Fraser said.
"Mr Springborg has publicly stated that he will reveal all on Tuesday - in particular how he had identified 'new financial streams' to draw funding from.
"Just what does "new financial streams mean?"
"It can really only mean one of two things: new taxes or cutting jobs,''
Mr Fraser said.
"Mr Springborg, come clean and explain to the people of Queensland how you are going to pay for these big spending election promises.
Mr Fraser said that the unfunded promises included $1.7 billion pledged on the first full day of the campaign, an additional $316 million on day two, further promises worth $26 million and another $500 million from Fiona Simpson on Friday.
"While Mr Springborg may think the global financial crisis is 'peripheral' the truth is it's serious and needed to be treated that way.
"This is not the time to go on an unfunded spending spree.
''The clock is ticking Mr Springborg.
"The people of Queensland deserve to know how you are going to pay for these promises.''
