Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Police Minister Judy Spence and Member for Ashgrove Kate Jones today officially opened the refurbished police station at The Gap.
Ms Spence said: “The Bligh Government has invested $1 Million in the refurbishment of The Gap Police Station which will bolster policing services in Brisbane’s western suburbs.
“This new state-of-the-art facility will ensure police in this area are well resourced to do their job protecting the community and fighting crime.
“In 2006, the Queensland Government made an election commitment to refurbish this police station, as part of our four year $260 Million Queensland police infrastructure plan.
“I’m pleased to see we are delivering on that promise as this project reaches completion. A key improvement of the re-modelled station is that it now has space for a Major Incident Room.
“Policing services to The Gap were not interrupted during the police station refurbishment which began in September 2008,” Ms Spence said.
“During this time, personnel from The Gap Police Station maintained their important focus on public safety operating out of temporary premises across the road at The Gap Village Shopping Centre.
“The fact that the Queensland Police Service was able to make such an arrangement was a win for both its personnel and the general community.”
Member for Ashgrove Kate Jones welcomed the opening of the Million dollar project, which will provide local officers with the modern facilities required for policing in the 21st century.
“This refurbished police station at 965 Waterworks Road is a huge boost for our local area.
“The counter service will operate during general business hours with patrols operating from 6.00am until 12:00am. The area will be serviced by other stations outside those hours,” Ms Jones said.
“I know police and the local community will welcome this excellent new facility in our area.”
Ms Spence said the refurbished police station at The Gap is just one of four major capital works projects in the Metropolitan North Region to be completed this year.
“This year’s budget delivered a record $142 Million to build new police stations and upgrade existing ones across the State – a $40 Million increase from last year,” Ms Spence said.
“In the Metropolitan North Region, this includes more than $26 Million for new and improved police stations at Carseldine, Fortitude Valley and Mango Hill/ North Lakes as well as The Gap.
“The Bligh Government will continue to work with local communities to ensure we provide the facilities and services they need for Tomorrow’s Queensland.”
