Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr and Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt today inspected plans for a day service centre in Cannonvale to boost learning and recreational opportunities for people with a disability in the Whitsundays.
Ms Nelson-Carr said the Bligh Government had invested $500,000 in the construction of the Whitsunday Flexible Respite Care centre and it represented a significant investment in the disability sector.
“When the centre is completed, Whitsunday Flexible Respite Care will be able to provide more opportunities and choices for people with a disability, ensuring they have access to quality care, as well as recreational and educational activities,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“The purpose-built centre will be a place for people with a disability to socialise and develop a range of new skills.
“The day services involve a range of activities for people with a disability, including pre-vocational classes, recreational and leisure pursuits, and life skills development.
“The Bligh Government’s investment in this centre is part of our commitment to building fairer communities for Queenslanders.”
Ms Jarratt said the new facility would be a great boost to the Whitsundays, providing an important service for people with a disability in the region.
“The service supports local people with a disability and helps them participate in the community and enjoy access to quality services, such as respite and education,” Ms Jarratt said.
“Plans for the new centre include a library area, meeting room, computer area, kitchen, administration area, staff offices and sensory room.
“With more space at the centre, the organisation will be able to run group and individual programs to help people develop quality and independent lifestyles.
“Centrally located opposite the Centro Shopping Centre on the direct bus route between Proserpine and Airlie Beach, I expect the service will be well-supported by locals.”
Construction on the new facility is expected to begin once the plans are finalised.
