Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
A total of 69 people will employed during a $6.6 million project which will provide a smother ride for motorists on a section of the Sunshine Motorway, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today.
The improvements involve laying a new asphalt surface to improve ride characteristics and durability on the eastbound carriageway of the 4km motorway section between Sippy Downs and Kawana Way.
“The jobs that will be created during the life of this important project will be a great boost for the local area area,” Mr Pitt said.
“The government’s number one priority is to save jobs during this time of unprecedented global economic hardship and I was delighted to hear these extra jobs have been created.”
The project follows the recently completed motorway duplication and construction of the new Dixon Road-Claymore Road interchange.
“Since the motorway upgrade opened mid last year, the community has been experiencing a more comfortable and less congested journey through this section,” Mr Pitt said.
“When complete, this rehabilitation project will provide an even better drive for the 35,000 motorists who use the motorway each day.”
In addition to the eastbound carriageway improvements, Main Roads will lay new asphalt on the northbound exit from the Bruce Highway to the Sunshine Motorway.
The project is expected to be finished by mid 2009, weather permitting.
Mr Pitt said rehabilitation work will also take place on a small section where the southbound Bruce Highway ramp joins the Sunshine Motorway.
“Ramp work will be undertaken over a few nights in March to minimise disruption to motorists as much as possible. Main Roads will advertise the specific dates and changed traffic conditions closer to the start of works. “
Main Roads will temporarily close both ramps and one eastbound motorway lane between 7pm and 5am. Local access will be maintained for residents in Cunning and Wilson roads.
Traffic will be detoured to either the Maroochydore Road or Caloundra Road interchanges. Detour signage will be installed to provide drivers with advanced warning of the closures.
“Roadworks can be hazardous for both road users and roadworkers. I encourage motorists to slow down, obey roadwork signage and drive to the changed road and traffic conditions.”
The contract for the Sunshine Motorway work has been awarded to Downer EDI Works.
