GET READY TO VOTE ON QUEENSLAND’S TOP 150 ICONS FROM 2 MARCH 2009

Premier
The Honourable Anna Bligh

From 2 March 2009 Queenslanders will have a once-in-a-150 year chance to vote on what they think are Queensland’s top 150 icons out of a list of 300 potential icons, Premier Anna Bligh said today.

“Queensland is 150 years young this year,” Ms Bligh said.

“This is a great time for us to define who we are and what says Queensland to us.

“We started this process in October last year inviting the public to put forward their nominations to their local member for icons across 10 categories from state shapers and sports legends to what people think is typically Queensland.

“More than 700 nominations were received from State MPs and the Q150 Short-listing Panel chaired by my Parliamentary Secretary, Phil Reeves MP, had the challenging job of short-listing these nominations to 300.

“As expected, Q150 icons have sparked plenty of interest and healthy debate and getting the list down to the top 150 will be no easy feat.

“Indeed it is up to Queenslanders to make the final choice.

“Public voting on the Q150 website www.q150.qld.gov.au begins on 2 March and closes on 30 April. Or look out in your local paper for a Q150 icons voting form at the end of March.

“Now is the time for Queenslanders to have their say and identify Queensland’s top defining moments. The Fitzgerald Inquiry, the Qantas story or World Expo 88?

“What about our top Events and Festivals? Coolangatta Gold, the Ekka or Mount Isa Rodeo?

“Queenslanders have a reputation for being innovative so what innovations and inventions will make the top 150 list? The Dingo fence, School of the Air or a world-first underwater computer?

“What locations are quintessential Queensland? South Bank, Surfers Paradise or Charters Towers?

“The Great Barrier Reef just has to be one of our greatest natural attractions. After all you can see it from outer space.

“What other natural attractions will Queenslander vote for? From the Daintree to the Whitsundays and Fraser Island, we are spoilt for choice.

“As for sports legends, there’s no denying Queensland has more than it’s fair share of legends to choose from which might just be the hardest job of all and the same can be said for influential artists.

“Who will be identified among the top state-shapers? Lady Diamantina, Surf Lifesavers or Wayne Bennett?

“Will the Story Bridge make it into the top structures and engineering feats alongside Skyrail Rainforest Cableway or the Old Windmill at Wickham Terrace? The choice is yours.

“On the lighter side of life, could the macadamia nut or mud crab be typically Queensland?

“Who knows? One thing is for sure. We will all soon know the answer to these questions and more.

“After 30 April, I look forward to seeing just what Queenslanders have said says Queensland to them and to making the announcement on the (top 150) Q150 icons during Queensland Week in June.”

Each Q150 icon category aligns with the Q150 theme of our people, our places and our stories.

Q150 is proudly supported by Bank of Queensland, Santos, The University of Queensland, Warner Bros. Movie World, Qantas, Bundaberg Rum, Clovely Estate, Coca-Cola, XXXX, Austereo, APN News and Media, Macquarie Southern Cross Media, Network 10, Nova 106.9FM and Quest Community Newspapers.
