The Honourable Anna Bligh
Premier Anna Bligh today urged Queenslanders across the State to participate in tomorrow’s National Day of Mourning for those affected by the tragic bush fires in Victoria.
Ms Bligh will represent Queensland at the national ceremony in Melbourne.
“While many Queenslanders are going through tough times with the recent floods, we have all been affected by the recent events in Victoria.
“The tragic loss of lives and property – with whole communities wiped out – has devastated the nation and like all Australians, our thoughts will be with our Victorian neighbours tomorrow.
“I urge Queenslanders across the State – whether privately in your own home or at a community event – to take a moment to remember those who have suffered.”
Queensland will support the National Day of Mourning with a ceremony at South Bank tomorrow.
Ms Bligh said the ceremony would be held from 9:30am and include a live telecast of the National Day of Mourning ceremony in Melbourne.
“There will also be commemorative performances by the amazing Brisbane Birralee Voices and Katie Noonan,” Ms Bligh said.
“The event will conclude with the laying of flowers on the tribute wall. Condolence books will also be available for people to record their thoughts and sympathies.”
People are encouraged to bring along a yellow flower to show their support. Flowers can be purchased on the day, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal.
Free bus and train travel will be available to and from South Bank between 8am and 2pm – visit www.translink.com.au for more information.
“Let’s send a strong message of support from Queensland to everyone in Victoria who is suffering from this tragedy,” Ms Bligh said.
