Mitchell's main street completed

The finishing touches to the upgrade of Mitchell’s main street on the Warrego Highway have now been completed, delivering much-needed improvements for road users in south-west Queensland.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese, said line marking signified the completion of the $3.1 million Australian Government funded project in Mitchell.

The Mitchell main street, between Louisa and Ann Streets, has been re-constructed to provide a strengthened and widened road surface. Following the opening of the road to traffic last year, final asphalt sealing, landscaping, line marking and other associated works have now been completed.

Mr Albanese said the project delivered more than road improvements.

“Not only did this upgrade improve road safety and efficiency, but it provided employment opportunities by sustaining approximately 20 direct and indirect jobs during the life of the project,” Mr Albanese said.

“This is good for the people of the Mitchell region as local knowledge and skills are retained and utilised within the community.”

Mr Albanese said more than 1000 vehicles used this section of the Warrego Highway every day.

“I am pleased this project will now be able to deliver a smoother, safer road surface for these motorists,” Mr Albanese said.

“These important safety works, which also included asphalting the road surface, will help improve driving conditions for motorists well into the future.”

“The Australian Government has also committed a further $40 million in this area towards future upgrading works aimed at allowing Type 2 Road Train access between Roma and Mitchell.”

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt thanked the community, former Booringa Shire Council and new Roma Regional Council and businesses for their cooperation and patience during the upgrade works.

“The former Booringa Shire Council and local businesses provided a lot of feedback to Main Roads and I thank them for their support throughout the life of this project,” Mr Pitt said.

“During construction, council undertook a number of additional works to support the project, including an upgrade of the main street drainage system, additional landscaping and construction of centre median strips.

“This project has provided a full reconstruction of the road to address both the surface roughness and potholes associated with the old road,” Mr Pitt said.
