The Honourable Anna Bligh

Queenslanders are being urged to nominate the remarkable people or groups that have contributed significantly to making the state great.

“The Queensland Greats awards honour individuals and institutions whose long term or lifetime achievements have played a significant role in the history and development of Queensland,” Premier Anna Bligh said.

“With this year marking Queensland’s 150th year of separation from New South Wales, there has never been a better time to recognise the people and organisations that make our state the best place in Australia.”

Since the awards began in 2001, a total of 40 Queenslanders and three Queensland institutions have been named Queensland Greats. Each has been recognised with a commemorative plaque that is proudly displayed at Roma Street Parkland.

Previous recipients include World War I veteran Ted Smout OAM, rugby league coach Wayne Bennett OAM, former Queensland Governor Leneen Forde AC and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

“I encourage all Queenslanders to reflect on the greatness of our state over the past 150 years and nominate a friend, colleague, family member, community leader, well known individual or institution that they believe has made a significant contribution to Queensland.”

The 2009 Queensland Greats will be announced by the Premier during Queensland Week, 6 to13 June 2009.

Nomination forms are available online at www.queenslandweek.qld.gov.au or by calling 07 3405 5215.

Entries close at 5pm on Friday 20 March 2009.
