The Honourable Warren Pitt

A $3 million project to upgrade vital sections of the Barwon Highway between Goondiwindi and Talwood will sustain 20 direct and indirect local jobs during the life of the project, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today.

Mr Pitt said the contract, to improve travelling conditions and safety along the highway west of Toobeah, had been awarded to Goondiwindi Regional Council.

“This road has been identified as an important southern transport link and the government is investing this money to improve conditions for motorists and ensure freight continues to move efficiently,” Mr Pitt said.

“The government is committed to preserving jobs during this time of unprecedented global economic hardship.

“Contracts such as this are particularly important in rural and regional areas to help maintain employment levels in the council workforce.

“This is good for the entire Goondiwindi region as local knowledge and skills are kept in the community.”

Stage one works include a range of targeted road safety initiatives including fatigue signage, delineation works and shoulder widening.

Sections of the highway are also being widened to nine metres to help improve safety.

Works for stage one are expected to be completed by the end of July 2009, weather permitting.

Stage two of the project, which is expected to begin in November 2009, will include similar safety enhancements to other sections of the Barwon Highway.

Mr Pitt urged motorists to slow down and drive with caution through roadworks to ensure their safety and the safety of roadworkers.
