The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

Young people in Burdekin Shire will have the chance to showcase their musical prowess during National Youth Week (28 March – 5 April 2009).

Burdekin Shire Council has gained the backing of the Queensland Government to stage the Burdekin Battle of the Bands in Home Hill.

Communities and Youth Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the Battle of the Bands would give young people a forum to showcase their talents and get involved in the local community.

“The Burdekin Battle of the Bands is a great way to celebrate National Youth Week, which is Australia’s single largest celebration of young people,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“The week-long celebrations are a chance for the community to acknowledge the positive contribution that young people make.

“In Tomorrow’s Queensland, we want to build communities where people feel connected to each other and events such as these help bring communities together.”

Burdekin Shire Council has received $2000 in funding from the Queensland Government to hold the Battle of the Bands.

Up to 12 bands will take to the stage at the Burdekin Memorial Hall, Home Hill on Sunday, 29 March from 6pm.

The competition is open to performers aged 12-25 years, living both in and outside of Burdekin Shire.

Burdekin Shire Council is one of 22 organisations across the state that are sharing in $64,759 of funding to host events during National Youth Week.

This year’s Youth Week activities relate to the theme Make a Move.

Youth Week is a joint Commonwealth, State and Local government initiative.
