Premier
The Honourable Anna Bligh
Wanted: 2009’s most inspirational Queenslanders
MARYBOROUGH: The search is on for Queensland’s highest achievers as part of the 2009 Suncorp Queenslanders of the Year awards.
“The Suncorp Queenslanders of the Year awards are our state’s highest citizenship honour and offer us an opportunity to give inspirational Queenslanders the recognition they deserve,” Premier Anna Bligh said.
“Queenslanders continue to excel across a range of disciplines — from charity to community, arts to architecture and sports to science — and their amazing achievements are recognised on a national and international stage.
“My Government has a vision of making our State the best it can be. To do that we need to reward Queenslanders who inspire, innovate and invest their time, energy and talents into caring for our community.
“Through the dedication of these Queenslanders, quality of life is improved for us all. This year, as we reflect on Queensland’s 150 years of independence, we remember our people, places and stories.
“If you know someone who has made a significant and worthwhile contribution to our state, now is your chance to reward that person by nominating them for one of Queensland’s most prestigious awards,” Premier Bligh said.
Former Suncorp Queenslander of the Year Professor Ian Frazer and developer of the world’s first cervical cancer vaccine urged Queenslanders to nominate the people making a difference in the community.
“Nominating someone you know for the Suncorp Queenslanders of the Year is a great way to highlight their achievements and allow all Queenslanders to share in their success,” Professor Frazer said.
Nominations can be submitted for either Suncorp Queenslander of the Year or Suncorp Young Queenslander of the Year.
The winners will be announced by the Premier during Queensland Week, 6 to13 June 2009. Each winner will receive a $2,000 grant to help them continue their work within their chosen field or community.
Nominations for the 2009 Suncorp Queenslanders of the Year can be submitted online at www.suncorp.com.au/queenslander or at Suncorp branches.
Nominations close on Friday 20 March 2009. For further information on the awards visit www.queenslandweek.qld.gov.au or phone 07 3405 5215.
