Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Thirty full-time Queensland jobs will be created during construction of a new multi-million dollar mining storage facility in Mount Isa, Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.
Mr Wilson said the $4 million drill core storage project is a major coup for the Mount Isa community that will stimulate the local economy and generate jobs.
“We live in tough economic times. But the Bligh Government is securing Queensland’s future and building tomorrow’s Queensland today,” Mr Wilson said.
Mr Wilson said the purpose-built storage facility would house the growing collection of drill cores from mines and prospects in North Queensland.
Drill cores are solid, cylindrical rock samples taken from beneath the earth’s surface.
Minister Wilson said the new facility would allow explorers to get up close and personal with drill cores from all over North Queensland and gain a greater understanding of the region’s geological make-up.
“The information contained within a drill core can help explorers identify areas of mining and geothermal energy potential,” Mr Wilson said.
“A drill core collection is a library for explorers. It preserves a record of past geological exploration and adds value to today’s exploration.
“This is so important because today’s exploration means tomorrow’s jobs.”
Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan has welcomed the project and said it will enhance job opportunities in the Mount Isa community.
“Every job in mining creates six other jobs in the local community,” Ms Kiernan said.
“Community groups and businesses rely on the money spent by mining companies and their workers.”
Ms Kiernan said the Bligh Government has approved the purchase of around two hectares of land ideally located near the Mount Isa airport for the new drill core storage facility.
“With a construction and fit-out budget of just over $4 million to be spent on the facility over the next two years, this project will inject money into the local community and generate jobs in a region where the impact of the economic downturn has been strongly felt,” Ms Kiernan said.
