The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today officially opened MultiLink’s Day Respite and Community Centre in Logan Central which will cater annually for 250 Queenslanders from 46 ethnic backgrounds.
“Respite services are an extremely important component of the wide range of services provided to assist people with a disability, their families and carers in the Beenleigh and Logan communities,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“The Bligh Government recognises the outstanding job that families and carers do in caring for people with a disability,” she said.
“We also recognise that there are times when families need a break from these day-to-day responsibilities, giving them some precious time for some self-care and relaxation.”
Home and Community Care (HACC) – a jointly funded State and Commonwealth program – provided funding of $228,932 to MultiLink to modify a four-bedroom home into the much-needed facility.
“HACC services supports eligible people stay living in their own homes and remain so they continue to have independence, reducing the risk of prematurely or inappropriately admitting them to residential aged care,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“MultiLink receives Queensland Government funding of $1,076,891 to deliver social support, nursing care, personal care, respite and centre-based day care, client care coordination, transport, counselling and advocacy services.”
The expansion will additionally create an estimated 6 additional full-time equivalent staff for the centre, taking the full-time positions to an estimated 40.
Member for Woodridge Desley Scott said the facility was a great asset to the Logan and Beenleigh communities.
“MultiLink’s Day Respite Centre enables eligible people to socialise and participate in activities such as bingo, tai chi, low-impact exercises, craft and musical activities,” Ms Scott said.
“The centre will make a real difference to the lives of clients and their families.”
The centre is located at Mayes Avenue, Logan Central. For more information about the MultiLink service, contact 3808 4463.
