Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts has visited the future home of the Queensland Ambulance Service’s regional staff development unit at Pimpama today to turn the ceremonial first sod on the project.
Mr Roberts said that when complete in around 12 months, the new $2.64 million building would provide a welcome boost for staff and ambulance in the Gold Coast region.
“The regional staff development unit is where ambulance officers from across the region go to undertake additional training, including paramedic training,” Mr Roberts said.
“The unit also provides a daytime intensive care paramedic response to the local area.”
Mr Roberts said the RSDU’s presence in Pimpama dated back to 2003.
“The former Pimpama Ambulance Station was converted into the RSDU in 2003 and over time the building was modified to improve functionality, increase the number of training rooms and provide for additional staff,” he said.
“Significant structural damage from an accidental fire around 12 months forced the unit to move to a temporary location in Springwood, so I am delighted to be here today to officially mark the start of construction of the unit’s new home.”
“The new building will accommodate the 10 staff who currently work in the RSDU as well as the training requirements for many years to come.”
Mr Roberts said the new home for the RSDU was yet another demonstration of the Bligh Government’s commitment to Queensland’s emergency services.
“Thanks to increased funding from the Bligh Government 63 extra ambulances officers will be employed in the south-east regional this financial year on top of the 31 additional officers last year,” he said
“Additionally, 31 new ambulance vehicles will be allocated to the region this year, which will provide a net increase of seven vehicles,” he said.
