Mudgeeraba interchange improvement works begin

Construction on the $47 million Mudgeeraba interchange upgrade project started today (February 16), Australian Government Minister for Transport Anthony Albanese and Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt announced today.

Mr Albanese and Mr Pitt said the project was part of the $420 million jointly funded package of works for the Pacific Motorway at the Gold Coast, and also included interchange upgrades at Neilsens Road, Varsity Lakes and Coomera, and the six-laning of sections between exits 73 and 77.

Touring the project site today, Member for Mudgeeraba Dianne Reilly said the interchange upgrade would reduce congestion and improve traffic flow for motorists travelling on this key route.

“Currently, congestion through this interchange and on the local road network is significant, with traffic banking back on the motorway and causing dangerous situations for motorists,” Mrs Reilly said.

“This project will include the construction of a four-lane duplicated overpass bridge and the installation of traffic signals on the western side of the motorway.

“Abigroup Constructions has been awarded the contract to carry out the interchange works which, when completed, will help cater for the expected traffic growth through Mudgeeraba for the next 20 years.

"This important safety upgrade will improve driving conditions for local residents and commuters travelling on the Pacific Motorway.

"This upgrade is part of the much larger congestion management plan for the motorway, which also includes a $158 million project to widen sections of the motorway to six lanes between Nerang and Worongary.

Federal Member for Forde Brett Raguse said the the first stage of the upgrade was designed to direct traffic away from the existing western roundabout, which would reduce both congestion and queuing on to the motorway.

“Other safety features include improved pedestrian and cycle access and an underpass at Highfield Drive,” Mr Raguse said.

"Improving the Pacific Motorway at the Gold Coast is a priority for the Queensland and Australian governments, and as works start at the Mudgeeraba interchange, we are on the way to reducing congestion and improving safety.”

The Mudgeeraba intersection upgrade is expected to be completed in mid 2010, weather permitting.
