Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine
Valentine’s Day 2009 is set to become an unforgettable anniversary date for 20 couples who will be married on 14 February at the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) in Brisbane.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine said the interest in marrying on the most romantic day of the year had doubled, with the Registry extending its hours to accommodate the loved-up couples.
“Last year the Brisbane Marriage Room hosted nine ceremonies on Valentine’s Day, so this year celebrants will be kept extra busy on the day,” Mr Shine said.
“Registry weddings are ideal because they offer couples a fuss-free, elegant and affordable alternative in a stylish location, which can accommodate up to 50 guests.
“Couples can be married in the Brisbane Marriage Room, located in the heritage-listed Old Government Printery on George Street, near the scenic Botanic Gardens.”
“Couples who marry at the registry in 2009 are able to order a special commemorative certificate in recognition of Queensland’s 150th birthday,” Mr Shine said.
“Civil ceremonies can be arranged at the registry by appointment, with at least one calendar month's notice required.”
Ceremonies are conducted during normal business hours on weekdays and between 10am and 4.30pm on Saturdays. The wedding room will be available on the Easter Saturday (11 April).
Registry weddings are also available in many Queensland courthouses in larger rural and regional areas, with four couples to be married at courthouses this Valentine’s Day, including three at Southport and one at Ipswich.
Queensland marriages increased in 2008 with 27,033 registered, compared to 25,808 in 2007. The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages performed 1,432 weddings in 2008.
For more information on weddings at the registry phone the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages on 3224 7414 or visit www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm.
