Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation
The Honourable Andrew McNamara

Time is running out for Queensland businesses to nominate for the State’s top environmental awards.

Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation Minister, Andrew McNamara said today that nominations for the Bligh government’s fourth EPA Sustainable Industries Awards would close on February 27, 2009.

“Companies acting sustainably are saving Queensland jobs,” Mr McNamara said.

“The bottom line is that by setting high environmental benchmarks businesses are not just saving the environment, they’re also saving money.

“In this tough economic climate every dollar saved contributes to keeping Queensland jobs.”

Mr McNamara said the awards highlight the importance of the Bligh Government's Toward Q2 vision of promoting a strong, smart and green Queensland.

"Business leaders in sustainability should be recognised for their efforts,” he said.

“Organisations who have invested in technology or programs to save water, energy and waste should consider nominating.”

Entries are encouraged from Queensland businesses, individuals, community and not-for-profit organisations and local governments.

The Awards are being hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency and will be presented in these sponsored categories:

  • Industrial Eco-efficiency (Foster’s Group)
  • Corporate Sustainability (Westpac Bank)
  • Innovation in Sustainable Technologies (Hatch)
  • Sustainability Partnership (Conics and Natural Solutions)
  • Sustainability in the Built Environment (Ergon Energy)
  • Rural Sustainability (Australian Country Choice and Coles)
  • Resource Industries Sustainability (Queensland Resources Council)

The winners of each Award category will be announced at the official Awards dinner held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 12 June 2009.

Previous winners include IKEA, Mackay canegrower Lawrence Bugeja, ALDI, Leighton’s Green Square project, and The Currumbin Ecovillage.
