The Honourable Warren Pitt

Work is expected to start next month on a $1.8 million project to build a replacement bridge at Wallace Creek on Boonah–Rathdowney Road, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today.

Mr Pitt said the new two-lane concrete structure would replace the current single-lane timber bridge.

“About 900 vehicles use this approved B-double route every day and the new bridge will provide a safer and more efficient trip for motorists,” Mr Pitt said.

"RoadTek will replace the old bridge with a new two-lane, nine-metre wide bridge, as well as widening the road shoulders.

"The replacement bridge will increase safety in the vicinity of the creek crossing and provide an efficient and safe arterial route linking the rural Boonah and Rathdowney townships."

Mr Pitt said 14 direct and indirect jobs will be sustained over the life of the project.

“During these challenging economic times, the government will continue to fight to secure jobs for Queenslanders, and this project will certainly contribute to that.”

Mr Pitt said visibility for motorists travelling towards Rathdowney from the bridge would also be enhanced, with the vertical alignment to be improved at Quarry Access Road.

"When work starts, a side track will be built to maintain traffic movement during construction and minimise impacts on the local community,” Mr Pitt said.

The replacement bridge is due for completion in September 2009. RoadTek will then demolish the old bridge and recycle the timber to use in maintaining other timber bridges in the region.

This project is funded as part of the Regional Bridge Renewal Program. The State Government has committed $350 million over five years (2005-2010) to replace 100 bridges in regional Queensland.

The program involves replacing ageing bridges with structures able to accommodate current and future freight load demands.
