Communities and Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has today announced a funding boost for Deaf Services Queensland to pilot a statewide language and translating service.

The organisation has received $613,666 to run the two-year pilot and collect data to plan for future services and support.

“Deaf Services Queensland has more than 100 years experience in providing interpreting and translating services to enable people with a disability so they can have access and equity in their lives,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“This funding is being used by Deaf Services Queensland to establish and manage an interpreting and translating service over the next two years which will improve access to disability supports,” she said.

“It will support DSQ-funded non government services by giving them timely access to interpreters and translators by making a single phone call or web hit, so they in turn can better assist people with a disability who require language support services.

“This includes engaging accredited interpreters for an individual, providing information at community disability forums and translating service materials.”

State Parliament Member for Yeerongpilly Simon Finn will be officially launching the project on Friday, February 13.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders, South Sea Islanders and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds will be the beneficiaries of this important project,” Mr Finn said.

“It will also help people who are deaf or who have a vision impairment.”

As part of the pilot, Deaf Services Queensland will gather detailed information about how language services are provided for people with a disability.

Minister Nelson-Carr said this important information would guide the ongoing development of language services for the future.
