RBWH Foundation Awards pay tribute to Queensland medical researchers

Health Minister Stephen Robertson yesterday paid tribute to some of Queensland’s leading medical researchers at an awards ceremony in Brisbane.

Mr Robertson announced the winners of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Foundation Research Grant Awards 2009.

“It’s important that recognise the dedicated work of these individuals involved in research that will improve patient outcomes and deliver improved clinical services to Queensland patients,” he said.

“There’s strong evidence that hospitals supporting clinical research deliver the best patient outcomes.

“They offer an improved environment of staff recruitment and retention and improve health service delivery through training and experience in research methodology.

“At the Royal Brisbane Hospital we are very fortunate to have such an active foundation which has supported clinical research for more than 20 years.”

Mr Robertson said the Bligh Government was committed to funding medical research and innovation under its Smart State Strategy.

“Last week I announced the establishment of Queensland Health’s Office of Health and Medical Research as part of our $25.65 million Smart State Medical Research and Development Strategy,” he said.

“The Office of Health and Medical Research will support the RBWH Foundation to deliver improved health care services for all Queenslanders.

“This is part of our Smart State vision under which we’ve so far committed $3.4 billion to create a smarter, healthier and more prosperous Queensland.”
