Minister says “Aye Karumba” to airstrip sealing project
Queensland Transport Minister, John Mickel today announced a significant allocation of funding towards the cost of sealing the Kurumba airport runway.
“The project or sealing the existing runway will assist aircraft landings for a wider range of mining and tourism charter aircraft and as well improving vital services such as those provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service,” Mr Mickel said.
Mr Mickel said the runway was a vital link for the remote community of about 600 residents which was frequently cut off from road transport by seasonal flooding.
“I have received very strong representations from local MP Betty Kiernan on behalf of the people and businesses of Karumba on the need for the airstrip to be sealed, and I am pleased to be able to make this funding available.”
The funding allocation will be made through the 2009-10 Regional Airport Development Scheme.
“The approval is on the basis of a third contribution amounting to approximately $320,000 with similar contributions from the Commonwealth and local councils,” Mr Mickel said.
“Funding from the Commonwealth will not be confirmed until June. However, if this is unsuccessful Queensland Transport will increase its level of funding to meet half the project cost.”
