Premier launches flood appeal

Premier Anna Bligh has launched an appeal for residents of the state’s flood-affected north and north-west with a $500,000 contribution from the State Government.

Ms Bligh said with a damage bill so far estimated at $142 million and with 62 per cent – or 1 one million square kilometres – of the state flood-affected, north Queenslanders were doing it tough and were in need of all the help they could get.

Ms Bligh has today seen the effects of the flood during a tour of Ingham where locals are waiting for the flood waters to recede so the true effects of the flood damage can be assessed.

“Having seen the flood devastation first-hand, I’d urge everyone to dig deep and lend a helping hand to all of those Queenslanders who have suffered through this widespread flooding,” Ms Bligh said.

“No donation – whether it be $20 or $2 – is too small. Every dollar will be directed toward helping victims.

“From Monday, you can donate to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal Fund at any of the big banks including the Commonwealth, Westpac, NAB, ANZ, Suncorp Metway and the Bank of Queensland.

“Cheques can be made out to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal Fund.

“Or donors can contact the Smart Services Queensland Call Centre on 1800 173 349 with their credit card details. This line will be open 24 hours a day.

“This is a tough time for everyone in the state’s north but Queenslanders have a great reputation for chipping-in and helping a mate in need.”

Ms Bligh said the appeal would remain open for at least three months.

All donations are tax deductible and distribution of the funds will be undertaken by the Red Cross.

In addition to the Premier’s appeal, individuals and families suffering personal hardship as a result of the floods should call the Department of Communities for assistance on 1800 173 349

Personal hardship grants of $165 per person and up to $765 per family may be available for directly impacted residents.
