Shine announces new Ipswich Magistrate

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine today announced the appointment of Brisbane based barrister Virginia Sturgess to the Ipswich Magistrates Court.

Mr Shine said Magistrate Sturgess had been working within the Policy and Legislation area in the Department of Justice for more than 12 years.

“Magistrate Sturgess was appointed Assistant Director of the policy and legislation unit in May 2000 and was admitted as a barrister in October 1988,” Mr Shine said.

Mr Shine said Magistrate Sturgess had been instrumental in the development and drafting of criminal law policy including Chairing the Taskforce on Women and the Criminal Code from November 1998 until February 2000.

“Magistrate Sturgess's role as Magistrate of the Ipswich Magistrates Court will become effective from tomorrow,” Mr Shine said.

“I congratulate Magistrate Sturgess on her appointment to this important and critical role in the Queensland justice system and I’m confident she will serve the people of the Ipswich and the justice system well.

“Magistrate Sturgess’ experience in policy and criminal law will make her an invaluable asset to the Ipswich community.”

The Ipswich Magistrates Court heard almost 1,400 civil and 20,852 criminal matters in the past year.
