The Honourable John Mickel

Thailand open for business with Queensland

Thailand’s Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Bandhit Sotipalalit, is visiting Brisbane today to discuss Queensland’s promising trade relationship with Thailand.

Minister for Trade John Mickel met with the Ambassador earlier this morning and welcomed the visit on behalf of the Queensland Government.

“Ambassador Bandhit is a high-level representative of a valued trading partner for our State,” Mr Mickel said.

“The Ambassador indicated that despite the current economic climate opportunities are arising for Queensland to increase our trade ties with Thailand and for our exporters to assist in meeting the needs of Thailand’s markets.

“Improved export relationships and outcomes with Thailand and other valued overseas trading partners means more jobs for Queenslanders and that is the State Government’s strongest focus.

“The Ambassador and I discussed the possible opportunities arising for Queensland to assist with the construction of delayed Mega Projects in Thailand.

“These planned Mega Projects are large-scale, government-supported projects exceeding 1 billion Thai Baht (approximately A$50 million) and aim to build new and improved infrastructure in transport, housing, water, education, health care, energy, gas and telecommunications sectors.

“There is strong interest in pursuing any opportunities for Queensland businesses in Thailand’s infrastructure industries, particularly in the construction of electric train and dual rail projects where our State has developed a global competitive advantage.

“I welcome Ambassador Bandhit back to our State and look forward to continuing to work with him to strengthen trade ties between Queensland and Thailand,” Mr Mickel said.
