Assistance for flood-affected North Queensland residents
North Queensland residents affected by flooding can now access assistance to help them recover from the effects of the severe weather that has been lashing the region.
Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the Queensland Government had established a Community Recovery Centre at Ingham where affected residents could access information and emergency financial assistance.
“Unrelenting rain and flooding has battered North Queensland over recent weeks, and the Queensland Government is working hard to ensure residents are receiving the financial assistance and support they need,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Weather permitting, a Community Recovery Centre will operate from 12pm today (Wednesday 4 February) at the Royal Hotel, Lannercost Street, Ingham, with initial opening hours of 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
“Affected residents can apply for an Emergent Assistance Payment of up to $165 for an individual and $765 for a household of five people for essential items, such as food, clothing, medication and emergency accommodation.
“Department of Communities’ staff will help process applications for assistance, and representatives of Department of Housing, Lifeline and Red Cross will also be on hand to answer questions and provide support.”
People unable to visit the Community Recovery Centre are advised to telephone the Department of Communities’ Disaster Recovery Hotline on 1800 173 349.
Outreach assessment and support will be available to assist people in the outlying areas of Home Hill, Ayr and Giru.
Ms Nelson-Carr said means-tested assistance was also available for uninsured essential household contents and repairs to structural damage to houses directly caused by the recent flooding and rain.
“Maximum payment limits of up to $1,635 for eligible individuals and up to $4,910 for eligible couples or families apply for essential household contents such as bedding and whitegoods,” she said.
“Eligible individuals can receive up to $10,100 and eligible couples or families up to $13,600 to address structural damage, but the home must be the principal place of residence for the owners.
“All applicants are required to provide suitable identification such as a driver’s licence, Medicare card or birth certificate.”
