Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson

SEQ electricity supply given $35 million boost

South East Queensland’s high voltage electricity supply has been bolstered thanks to a new $35 million substation upgrade, Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.

Mr Wilson said Powerlink’s Greenbank Substation, located on the southern outskirts of Brisbane, has been fitted with a new Static Var Compensator – a piece of equipment that controls voltage levels and helps to ensure reliable energy supply to customers.

“Electricity demand in South East Queensland has increased by a third over the past five years,” Mr Wilson said.

“The Bligh Government is keeping ahead of the game by investing in Queensland’s energy future.

“The upgrade at Greenbank Substation will help increase the transmission capacity into the south east corner and in particular, the Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich areas.”

Mr Wilson said the new equipment at Greenbank Substation, together with a new $120 million transmission line completed last year, will meet the electricity needs of around
150,000 households.

“The Bligh Government is securing the state’s future by building tomorrow’s Queensland today and we’re doing this on time and on budget,” Mr Wilson said.

Mr Wilson said the last time the Liberals and Nationals were in power they left the state in darkness for four whole days.

“The Liberal National Party Opposition has been plagued by infighting and mismanagement – they simply don’t have what it takes to manage the state’s electricity infrastructure, let alone the economy,” Mr Wilson said.

“While the Liberals and Nationals fight amongst themselves, the Bligh Government is planning for the future and investing $3 billion to ensure Queensland’s electricity network keeps pace with future growth.”
