Intersection upgrade to improve safety at Canungra

The Bligh Government has started work on a $1.3 million project to improve safety at the intersection of Beaudesert–Nerang Road and Beechmont Road at Canungra.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the intersection works would improve safety at this busy intersection, with funding being provided under the Queensland Government's Safer Roads Sooner program.

“The intersection is being reconfigured so that Beaudesert–Nerang Road is the through road and motorists approaching from Beechmont Road will stop at a T-intersection,” said Mr Pitt, who was on the Gold Coast today to inspect the start of works on the Hope Island Road and Gold Coast Highway upgrades.

“This will give priority to those travelling between Canungra and Nerang and eliminate any confusion for motorists.

“The upgrade involves new right-turn lanes on all three legs of the intersection as well as improved access to the refuse station.”

During the works, which start this week, motorists will be directed through the work site by traffic controllers. Some delays can be expected, and the speed limit will be reduced to 40km/h.

Working hours will be from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

About 5500 vehicles a day use this intersection, with almost five percent of those being heavy vehicles.

The works will be carried out by Main Roads’ construction arm, RoadTek, and are expected to be completed in mid April 2009.
