VEALES ROAD INTERSECTION SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

Motorists using the busy Veales Road intersection north of Townsville are enjoying the benefits of a recent safety boost, thanks to the $48 million Woodlands to Veales highway upgrade project.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese said the completion of the new “seagull intersection” with the Bruce Highway provides an innovative and safe option to a traditional T-intersection.

"A seagull intersection allows turning traffic to negotiate the intersection in a controlled and safe manner and merge safely onto the highway without the need for traffic lights.”

"The operation of the intersection will be enhanced by providing a dedicated lane to enter the southbound traffic flow,” he said.

Mr Albanese said the Woodlands to Veales project had generated jobs for 374 people.

Queensland Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the intersection was the second of its kind in Townsville and Main Roads was committed to providing for the rapid residential growth in the Northern Beaches, by delivering safe and efficient access to the highway.

“The Veales Road intersection and the overpass at Mount Low are important steps in achieving this goal,” Mr Pitt said.

Mr Albanese also said that construction on the Woodlands to Veales upgrade is progressing well.

“Despite the recent wet weather, 85 per cent of the new Stoney Creek bridge and the Mount Low overpass is complete.

“Embankment works on the overpass are progressing well and road pavement has begun,” he said.

Construction on the highway upgrade commenced in March 2008.
