Weed war: Townsville residents enlisted in wet season battle
TOWNSVILLE residents with unwelcome visitors in their backyards since the start of the wet season will have an opportunity to find out how to get rid of them at a weed information morning on Sunday (February 1).
Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin said: “My department will host this informative display near centre stage at Cotter’s Markets in Townsville City from 8:30am to 12pm.”
“Biosecurity Queensland weed experts will be on hand to answer questions and there will be native tree giveaways for residents wanting to replace any garden invaders.
“The wet conditions over summer months allow weeds to spread,”
“We want to encourage Townsville residents to take back control of their gardens before a small problem becomes a big one, so hopefully our weed information day will be a kick start,” Mr Mulherin said.
Biosecurity Queensland extension officer Rosalie Anderson said DPI&F is currently operating nationally cost-shared eradication programs across Townsville combating Siam weed, Miconia and Limnocharis.
• Siam weed - this serious agricultural and environmental weed is listed as one of the world’s worst weeds.
• Miconia - invades rainforests
• Limnocharis – invades wetlands.
Other weeds to be featured at the display will include Singapore daisy, Captain Cook tree and Asparagus fern.
