Bligh Government answers call to make Campwin Beach an official locality

Natural Resources and Water Minister Craig Wallace today announced that Campwin Beach, south of Mackay, will be made an official locality.

Mr Wallace said the decision will result in improved services for locals and tourists in the popular beachside town.

“This decision means the growing coastal community of Campwin Beach will now be recognised as a stand alone locality,” Mr Wallace said.

“The existing boundaries for Sarina Beach will be modified to create the separate locality, making it easier for Australia Post and emergency services to identify specific locations in the expanding area.

“While the name Campwin Beach is well known and commonly used locally, and was already an officially approved name on the Department of Natural Resources and Water’s (NRW) Place Names database, it had not been officially named a locality in its own right.

“Officially naming this locality will ensure it is included in official maps and in the records of all government agencies.

“Local residents liaising with government agencies, or providing their address for correspondence, will now be able to say with confidence ‘I live at Campwin Beach’, without any fear of confusion.”

Mr Wallace congratulated The Association for the Improvement of Campwin Beach, for setting the wheels in motion by applying to the Department of Natural Resources and Water for the new locality to be created.

Association secretary Don Graham said he was excited about the fact that Campwin Beach was now its own locality, with more and more permanent residents now living in the area.

“This decision means more certainty for the residents with the delivery of mail and the ability to get more accurate location details to emergency services and visitors to the area,’’ Mr Graham said.

“It will make life much easier. Campwin’s a wonderful place for both permanent residents and visitors — it’s very user-friendly for families.’’

NRW administers the Place Names Act 1994 which controls the naming of localities, suburbs and geographical features in Queensland.

The decision to create the official locality of Campwin Beach was made following a period of public consultation. No objections were received.

Copies of the map outlining the new boundary for Campwin Beach are now available at NRW’s Mackay office in 22-30 Wood Street or by calling 4967 0820.
