Funds boost helps Rockhampton manage public intoxication

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced $500,856 in funding over the next three years for the Aboriginal and Islander Community Resource Agency in Rockhampton.

“The agency’s staff work with local people who are intoxicated and at risk of harm in public places and help them overcome alcohol addiction,” she said.

“The service includes providing transport for adults intoxicated in public spaces and education sessions to divert young people from intoxication and police custody.

“Programs are a mixture of prevention, training, community development, assessment and referred treatments tailored to suit each person, taking into consideration their health, cultural, spiritual, professional and emotional needs.”

State Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten said the agency also promotes understanding of those who are at-risk.

“It goes one step further and educates the community about those struggling with alcohol-related issues with community workshops,” he said.

“An understanding community can make a lot of difference to a person who, when ready to leave the program and integrate back into the community, is taking those critical steps to stay on the right track.”

Mr Schwarten said more than 100 people had received information, advice or referrals from the agency’ public intoxication support program in the past year.

Department of Communities staff would continue to work closely with the organisation to develop a new service agreement which will identify culturally appropriate activities and strategies to meet the needs of the community.
