Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Watch out for kids motorists warned
As children return to school across Queensland today, Transport Minister John Mickel has urged motorists to pay particular attention when driving around schools.
“The first day back at school is an exciting and often scary time of year for kids, causing them to be easily distracted,” said Mr Mickel.
“They can run out on the roads with out looking or find themselves in dangerous road situations due to their inexperience.
“Motorists must also be aware the start of the school term means school zones will be back in action with 40km/hr speed limits in place around most school areas,” he said.
With most Queensland kids starting back at school this week, and Mr Mickel asked drivers to pay particular attention for children riding bikes, crossing roads, getting off buses, or out of cars.
The Minister said young children did not have the skills to judge speed and distance, were easily distracted, and were not always paying attention to what was going on around them.
“Being cautious and slowing down will not make much difference to your journey time, but it could save a child’s life,” said Mr Mickel.
“It can take just seconds for a child to run from the curb and into the path of oncoming traffic.
“A car travelling at 40km/hr can stop more than 11 metres sooner than one travelling at 60km/hr, this difference can literally mean the difference between life and death.
“Help keep our kids safe and be attentive when driving around schools, especially this week,” he said.
