The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Queenslanders urged to celebrate diversity on Australia Day
Queenslanders have been encouraged to get out and join in local Australia Day celebrations to welcome the country’s newest citizens.
Communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today (Monday 26 January) will attend an Australia Day Citizenship and Australia Day Awards ceremony in Townsville.
“We are a young country. We are a lucky country. We are a free country, and that’s why, regardless of our backgrounds, we should all rejoice,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Accepting people to Queensland, regardless of race, colour or religion is a foundation stone for a proud State.
“Today we welcome our newest citizens to begin new chapters in their lives as well as making valuable contributions to our shared future.
“The way in which Queenslanders from diverse backgrounds are able to live and work together in a productive manner is the cornerstone of our robust economy, and our communities.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said Queenslanders must also acknowledge and respect the traditional owners and elders of the land on which we live.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders have a strong and proud heritage,” she said. “We should make an effort and all learn more about their history and culture because through understanding comes acceptance, which will helps bring about reconciliation.
“We can’t change the past, but we can shape the future.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said co-existence must be shared within society.
‘We cannot be exclusive. We must embrace and celebrate diversity,” she said. “Multiculturalism is a way of life for all Australians. Just as we all share the experience of new beginnings, we all have a common humanity.
“The benefits of cultural diversity are very tangible in every aspect of our lives.
“Cultural diversity demands that we continue to find new ways to be responsive to the community we serve and that we respect human rights based on democracy, mutual respect, cooperation and equality of opportunity.
“Our Government recognises and welcomes the opportunities that the cultural diversity of our State and nation brings. We support diversity and harmony in the workplace, our homes and our communities.”
