The Honourable John Mickel

Clean, green success for TES in China

A Brisbane company specialising in energy efficiency has won a A$700 000 contract to provide energy services to a major hospital in Shanghai, China.

Minister for Trade John Mickel said Total Energy Solutions (TES) won the new contract by putting forward a guaranteed plan to save the Yue Yang Hospital more than RMB $2 million (approx A$440 000) per year, which represents a reduction of more than 15 per cent of the total site’s energy use.

“TES represents the kind of organisation that the State Government, with the help of Trade Queensland, is supporting to help create a stronger economy and a greener environment for tomorrow’s Queensland,” Mickel said.

“TES is a designer and provider of efficient small scale power, heating and cooling systems which provide solutions to reduce water and energy consumption.

“The company is also a member of a pre-qualified panel that provides comprehensive energy conservation services for Queensland Health, Queensland Corrective Services, Education Queensland and Queensland Public Works.

“The energy conservation technologies applied by TES for the Yue Yang Hospital project are just as applicable to hotels, commercial buildings, shopping centres and factories throughout Shanghai.

“The TES plan for the Yue Yang Hospital focuses on reducing running costs of air conditioning and lighting, improving the operational efficiency of their steam system and improving water conservation practices.

“The company currently has 16 staff based in Brisbane and Sydney. TES also has 3 locally engaged Chinese employees running its Shanghai (China region) office, which was opened by Premier Anna Bligh on her visit to China in April 2008.

“I sincerely congratulate TES on securing this groundbreaking contract which will help lift Queensland’s profile as a quality provider of environment-friendly energy solutions in China and bring in valuable export dollars for Queensland,” Mr Mickel said.

Managing Director of Total Energy Solutions, Mr Wynne Henderson, said that the success with Yue Yang Hospital was a recognition that the experience and expertise of TES has been valued by the tender review committee. It also reflects a great team effort to develop a project which will save over 300 000 litres of diesel fuel oil per year.

“Yue Yang Hospital is a great example where Chinese Traditional Medicine and Western Medicine practices are combined to provide the best medical services, using all the available know how from both East and West,” Mr Henderson said.

“This energy conservation project is also a great example of forward thinking Queensland companies being integrated into China’s operating procedures to the benefit of both regions,” Mr Henderson said.

Trade Queensland has an office in Shanghai and has provided ongoing support for TES in entering the China energy-saving market. This assistance has included provision of market intelligence, assistance in the establishment of a local office, advice on market strategies, and arranging introductions and business matching meetings with key clients which led to the signing of this major new contract.

The Yue Yang Hospital is an 800 bed facility, and the energy conservation project is being funded by the Shanghai Hospital Development Centre (SHDC) on behalf of the Shanghai Municipal Government.

The SHDC plans to arrange for another six to eight hospitals in Shanghai to participate in their Energy Conservation Program next year, and TES Shanghai will be actively pursuing these additional opportunities in 2009.

The Shanghai Municipal Government has a goal to achieve its Energy Conversation targets of 20 per cent reduction by 2012.
