Central Highlands council receives more than $3.2m in funding

Central Highlands Regional Council will receive more than $3.2 million in disaster relief funding to repair damage to essential public assets caused by monsoonal flooding in February and March 2008.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said floodwaters had caused significant damage to the council’s road infrastructure and council property.

“The flooding that occurred across many parts of Queensland last year caused considerable damage to the Central Highlands Regional Council’s road network,” Mr Pitt said.

“The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring that councils have the ability to repair these vital assets quickly, in order to minimise disruption to the community.

“If these assets were not repaired there would be the potential to severely impact the community, business and livelihoods.”

Member for Fitzroy Jim Pearce said the major works undertaken included: Mungabunda Road (upgrade works worth $376,926); Duaringa–Baralaba Road ($275,694); Mapala (Glenhauton) Road ($213,077); and Burkan Road ($200,241).

“The financial burden of this natural disaster would have significantly disadvantaged ratepayers if Central Highlands Regional Council was required to foot the bill,” Mr Pearce said.

“As a result, the State and Commonwealth governments have contributed $3,222,438, with the regional council contributing $50,000 towards the repair work.”

Mr Pearce said the funding was provided through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program, a joint State and Commonwealth initiative.
