The Honourable Judy Spence
Townsville V8 SuperCars on track despite heavy rains
Sport Minister Judy Spence said today all systems are go for the launch of Townsville's V8 SuperCar event despite monsoonal rains that have flooded much of the district.
"We are heading full throttle towards the Townsville V8 SuperCar roll out in July this year," said Ms Spence.
"While the recent wet weather in Townsville and North Queensland was extreme it is within the anticipated wet season and given the local flooding the Reid Park site has fared reasonably well," Ms Spence said.
"As with all major construction projects in the Queensland's north the implications of wet weather at this time of the year have been factored into the project management schedule."
Ms Spence said the Managing Contractor Leighton Constructions Northern Region confirmed there will be no delay in the overall construction schedule.
A spokesman for Leighton Constructions said the fabrication of concrete barricading is well underway with 500 barricades in place.
He said work had also begun on special taller barricades required for the pit lane with at least 30 of the 80 barricades already prepared. Fabrication of deck panels for the new bridge over Ross Creek are also on target.
Member for Thuringowa, Craig Wallace said, "The Department of Main Roads has already completed the preliminary work on the full section of Boundary Street and there is ample time for the final asphalt works to be completed.
"The rain has not delayed this event. The roar and spectacle of the V8s will be heard in July!" Mr Wallace said.
