Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning
The Honourable Paul Lucas
GLADSTONE: SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE STRATEGIC PLAN
Acting Premier Paul Lucas today announced the start of work to map out priorities for social infrastructure that will benefit the people of Gladstone for generations to come.
Mr Lucas said Buckley Vann Town Planning Consultants, together with Briggs and Mortar and Andrea Young Planning Consultants, have been appointed to develop a Social Infrastructure Strategic Plan for the Gladstone Region.
“With over $30 billion worth of industry projects under consideration Gladstone is entering a golden era of opportunity for resource companies to put something back into the region,” said Mr Lucas.
“Modern industry, particularly in regional centres like Gladstone, is very keen to be the good corporate citizen but often gets the impression Governments and communities lack coordination about what their priorities are.
“We’ll get far better bang for our buck doing the homework up front, rather than just periodically firing off requests for pet projects with little long term benefit.
“This plan will make sure money is invested where its needed most, to make a real difference to the quality of life for people who live here.
“It will identify projects in areas like accommodation, sport and recreation, the arts, education and health.
“Resource industries will continue to provide jobs and boost local businesses in Gladstone, but there is no question they can also have adverse impacts for the community that must be carefully managed.
“As part of this, companies need to look at ways they can create benefits for the whole community, not just the people they employ or do business with.”
The Mayor of Gladstone Regional Council, Cr. George Creed said his Council strongly supports this joint initiative.
"This is only the first step in a very important process," said Cr. Creed.
"This community looks forward to seeing the establishment of a social infrastructure funding scheme involving industry proponents as a consequence of this work," he added.
The Acting Premier said we’re already seeing resource companies investing in Gladstone’s long term future.
“The commitment today by Gladstone Pacific Nickel to spend at least $9 million on projects in this community is a great example for others,” said Mr Lucas
“Last year we saw the mining industry kick a goal by saving Marley Brown Oval, thanks to BMA Coal, Ensham Resources, Felix Resources, Jellinbah Resources, Peabody Energy, Wesfarmers Coal and Xstrata Coal Australia.
“Its not just about having a dynamic economy but also investing in facilities like Marley Brown Oval to provide lifestyle benefits as well.”
The plan will be developed over the next year, with an audit of the existing social infrastructure to identify shortfalls and take into consideration the potential impacts of major projects.
There will be an extensive consultation process with opportunities throughout the 12 months for people to contribute to the study and have their say.
“The people of Gladstone will play an important role in developing this plan and helping shape the future of their community,” said Mr Lucas.
“Importantly, this plan will be regularly updated as new major projects develop.”
The Social Infrastructure Strategic Plan is a partnership between Gladstone Regional Council, Gladstone Economic and Industry Development Board and the Department of Infrastructure and Planning.
