Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Crime prevention efforts in Logan will receive a significant boost with the introduction of regular local crime bulletins from police to members of the community.
Police Minister Judy Spence and Assistant Commissioner Paul Wilson today joined Logan-based MPs Barbara Stone (Springwood), Desley Scott (Woodridge), John English (Redlands) and Evan Moorhead (Waterford) to launch the Crime Bulletin for the Logan Police District.
Logan is the seventh police district to adopt a local Crime Bulletin. It is now distributed to more than 200,000 people in Queensland.
Ms Spence said she expects the locally-based crime bulletins, which will replace Neighbourhood Watch newsletters, will lead to greater community involvement in crime prevention activities.
“The crime bulletin is a user-friendly, electronic newsletter providing useful crime prevention information and details of real offences police are seeking information about,” Ms Spence said.
“The crime bulletins will provide subscribers, including Neighbourhood Watch groups, business owners and members of the public, with a range of strategies to prevent crime and increase community safety.
“These locally-focussed crime bulletins will enhance the capacity of the community to report crime and become involved in crime prevention.
“Our police do an excellent job of fighting crime in our communities – but they rely on the support of members of the public to protect themselves against crime and provide vital information to help solve crimes.
“This new initiative will help us to achieve our Toward Q2 goal of creating safer and more caring communities for Tomorrow’s Queensland.
“Every Queenslander can play a role in crime prevention, by adopting simple measures to secure their homes and property and protect themselves.”
Assistant Commissioner Paul Wilson said: “The Queensland Police Service is committed to working constructively with the state’s communities in the fight against neighbourhood crime.”
“Today’s launch of the new Crime Bulletin within the Logan District is just one tangible example of such efforts.
“I encourage everyone within the Logan district to embrace their Crime Bulletin and become better informed about the issues affecting their community while also learning how to prevent crime and enhance community safety.
“Getting timely and accurate information from the community is a vital part of modern day policing and this initiative provides yet another opportunity whereby the public may assist police to address crime within their local area.”
The Crime Bulletin is a joint crime prevention initiative involving the Queensland Police Service, Crime Stoppers and the Neighbourhood Watch program.
