A $7.7 million contract to carry out asphalt overlay work on roads in the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regional council areas has been awarded to Downer EDI Works.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Main Roads and Local Government Annastacia Palaszczuk said the work was part of a road rehabilitation project in the two areas.

"These works are aimed at improving the condition and general safety of roads in the regions," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Rehabilitation work will still in the next few weeks and will finish mid 2009, weather permitting.

"This project will help prolong the surfaces of these roads, while improving safety and providing a smoother driving surface for the comfort of road users."

Ms Palaszczuk said the road surface would be repaired and a new asphalt surface overlay applied to the identified roads.

"This is important preventive maintenance that will save money in the long run by protecting these roads against wear and tear from weather and traffic," she said.

"By doing these works now, it will help us avoid the need for costly repairs in the future.”

About 12km of road will be rehabilitated in total, with work taking place on seven key roads:

  • D’Aguilar Highway
  • Mooloolaba Road
  • Sunshine Motorway
  • Yandina South Connection Road
  • Yandina-Coolum Road
  • Yandina-Bli Bli Road
  • Bruce Highway on-ramp from Steve Irwin Way.
